Jean Buescher Bartlett
Jean will discuss the artistic, technical, and professional aspects of fine press printing, as well as how collaborative books with other artists, calligraphers, papermakers, and writers are produced. A slide show will be a part of this presentation.

“The Art of Fine Bookbinding.”

Jim Craven
Jim Craven has been a master bookbinder for 50 years and is the current head conservator at the UM Bentley Historical Library. He will present samples of his own fine leather bindings and explain how he comes up with an artistic style appropriate for the book to be bound. Demonstrations in rounding and backing a book, leather paring, gold tooling, and leather on-lays will be included.

“Poetry and Page Design.”

Keith Taylor
UM faculty member Keith Taylor talks about his own poetry and what goes into the design of his poems when putting them on to a page. At the end of the presentation, you will have an opportunity to hand letterpress print one of Keith’s poems as a keepsake.

“The Hand in Type, the art of type design”

Susan Skarsgard
Susan Skarsgard, a highly skilled and expressive calligrapher, offers a multi-media presentation highlighting the design processes of four well-known type designers demonstrating their development of a typeface from writing and gestural marks. Watching skillful hands at work, particularly in this digital age, is especially meaningful to understanding this unique and specialized art.

“Medieval Calligraphy and The Art of Illuminated Lettering.”

Pamela Rups
Pamela shows how to add a dazzling touch of real gold leaf to your artwork, printing, calligraphy, book, or rubber stamp creation. Pam will demonstrate at least three easy methods for applying gold leaf and talk about her experience of making her own medieval manuscript.

Find out what a professional book appraiser looks for when examining old or rare books. Learn a few tricks of the trade, information sources, and even some simple preservation and repair tips from a master of book appraising. Bring your own books for Tom to examine which will become a springboard for discussion.

Free 30 minute tour of Kerrytown resident Ben Burkhardt’s historic linotype printing equipment. See an actual demonstration and get a commemorative linotype plate with your name printed on it. Meet at the Information Booth 5 minutes before each tour.
