11:00 Lynne Avadenka — Book Art : The Power of Word and Image.
For over twenty years, artist Lynne Avadenka has been exploring the combined power of word and image in her limited edition books and works of art on paper. This combined slide and lecture presentation by Lynne, a nationally recognized book artist, will explore the book arts as a medium, and include some of her own book art pieces as a springboard for discussion.

12:00 Leyla Lau-Lamb — Excavation of Papyrus in Egypt
Last September, Leyla worked at the Tebtunis, Egypt excavation site. She will give a fascinating slide presentation showing the excavation of papyri after being buried for over 2000 years. Slides will also be presented from the Egyptian Museum and from Karanis, the site of the U of M excavation led by Francis W. Kelsey in the 1920’s.

1:00 Chris Reising — Altered Books New Moon Project
One of the most recent forms of artistic expression is Altered Books, books that are torn, painted, carved, collaged, or manipulated in some way into an altered work of art. Chris leads a group of six women from the Altered Book Workshop taught at Hollander’s last fall. Following that workshop, the women formed a group they called New Moon. As part of the presentation, they will share their altered books and the process they discovered during the six months that they worked together.

2:00 Jim Horton — Wood Engraving Presentation
Wood Engraving, in the late 18th century, opened the door for mass production representation in books, periodicals and newspapers. Book artists and printmakers in general are rediscovering the look and feel of wood engraving, and finding a new appreciation for it’s rich history. Jim will show examples, talk about the history of wood engraving, and demonstrate the tools and techniques of the process. Those in attendance will also get a chance to actually pull a print from a wood-engraved block.

3:00 Cathleen Baker — By His Own Labor: The Biography of Dard Hunter
Dard Hunter was an important designer in the American Arts and Crafts movement and a renowned paper historian. Cathleen Baker, PhD., conservator and art educator, will discuss her large-scale (360 page) project and printing on a Vandercook Press using Twinrocker hand-made paper. The process of how a hand printed, limited edition book goes from concept to printing will be highlighted in this unique slide and lecture presentation. A signing of the facsimile, a hardcover commercial book of the same title, will be available afterwards.

4:00 Jean Buescher Bartlett — Make An Artist Book
Join a highly accomplished book artist in making a simple book art structure. In this presentation you will become an active participant when you learn to sew a double signature, pamphlet book with a case cover. A window will be added to frame a pencil drawing you will do based on various natural objects that will be displayed. All materials are supplied. (Those participating should be over 12.) Jean will also discuss her work and explain why she is a book artist.
