Events

This year we are having events and activities in four main locations, and all day demonstrations on bookbinding, book arts, paper arts, letterpress, wood engraving, book repair, calligraphy, conservation, book appraisals, including a tour of a linotype print shop and much more.

11 a.m.

Lettering Arts & Book Making with Diane Stum Fekete.
11:00 - 12:15 

During this session, Diane will teach you some basic writing and calligraphic elements as you design a small and unique accordion folded booklet. This mini workshop is geared towards adults or young adults who would like to relax and enjoy an easy and fun project. All supplies and materials will be provided. 12:30 Learn to Make Your Own Comic Book with Jerzy Drozd.
12:30 - 1:45

Learn a few basic design, layout, and cartooning elements and then actually create your own mini comic book. Jerzy will show you some tricks of the trade and give you an actual hands-on lesson so you can do it yourself. Supplies will be provided.  Please call 734-741-7531 to register.
2 p.m.

The Making of the Kerrytown Poster with Jim Horton. 
2:00 - 3:15. 

Jim will recreate the process of how he, (and some of his students at Greenhills School) designed and printed the 2007 Kerrytown BookFest Poster. It's an incredible process and one that spoke to a by-gone era of old style letterpress printing, but is recently making a comeback. Learn how and why, and at the end of the presentation, have an opportunity to actually use an historic press to print your own BookFest bookplate or bookmark .  Please call 734-741-7531.

3:30 p.m.

Paper Engineering Magic with Matt Shlian.
3:30 - 4:45. 

Learn why Matt has been so in demand with artists, book publishers, and even makers of games. His incredible models and interactive sculptures will astound you. After seeing what he has done, Matt will then to teach you how to do it yourself!  (At least something on a little easier scale.) Come prepared to fold paper. Moderator Bill Castanier is a public realtions expert, avid reader, writer, and book collector.
 
Loren D. Estleman is the author of almost 60 novels, including the Amos Walker series of mysteries set in Detroit.  NICOTINE KISS is a Michigan Notable Book winner for 2007.
 
Dave Dempsey is the author of WILLIAM G. MILLIKEN: MICHIGAN'S PASSIONATE MODERATE, a Michigan Notable Book Winner for 2007.

The Agony and Ecstasy of Writing

Book tours, Movies, Trials, Prize nominations, subpoenas, rejections, starred reviews, negative reviews. All are possible following the completion of a manuscript.  This see-saw begins from the moment the inspiration is channeled to daily discipline.  Ann will draw on the diverse, often unexpected consequences of writing as each step of the journey from the thrill or frustration of creation to the applause or dismay of publication is ripe with emotion. Memoirs entail a twist on the issues of memory and truth, fiction and nonfiction.  Much of her talk will be customized to the audience’s questions about writing or publishing.

Chef Isabella Nicoletti is the Executive Chef at Paesano's and the author of PERBACCIOISABELLA, ITALIAN COUNTRY COOKING FROM YOUR GOOD FRIENDS AT PAESANO'S.
 
Chef Eric Villegas is the Executive Chef of Restaurant Villegas and the star of the Emmy winning FORK IN THE ROAD on PBS, as well as the author of FORK IN THE ROAD WITH ERIC VILLEGAS.

Teen authors and artists Ryan Mark Griffin, Ben Haddix, Galan Daafa and Dylan Cinti discuss writing, illustrating, publishing and selling their magazine, TALES FROM THE PIPE.

The Future of Comic Art

Moderator: Randall Scott
 Panel: Jerzy Drozd, Kay Fedewa, Jim Ottaviani & Chad Sell

Moderator Randall Scott is a Special Collections Librarian at Michigan State University, specializing in comics, popular fiction and radical materials.
 
Jerzy Drozd  is a comics and graphic novel artist who teaches workshops all over the midwest, including  at the Kerrytown BookFest (see Hollander's School Schedule).
 
Kay Fedewa is an artist who is writing a graphic novel about wolves called THE BLACKBLOOD ALLIANCE.
 
Chad Sell runs the Comics Workshop at The Neutral Zone and maintains a website of his work as well as self publishing autobiographical comics.
 
Jim Ottaviani  is the author of many graphic novels about science, and he currently works as a librarian for the University of Michigan.

Actionopolis: Illustrated Adventure Novels for Young Readers

Daniel Mishkin, Gary Reed, & Rob M. Worley

Daniel Mishkin is the author of THE FOREST KING, a prose novel for young readers, as well as a comic book artist with a career spanning 25 years.
 
Gary Reed is the author of numerous books and graphic novels, including the recent SPIRIT OF THE SAMURAI and adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein for Penguin Books.
