Events

This year we are having events and activities in four main locations, and all day demonstrations on bookbinding, book arts, paper arts, letterpress, wood engraving, book repair, calligraphy, conservation, and book appraisals.

A list of the activities at the four main venues is below.

Hollander’s School of Book and Paper Arts (www.hollanders.com)
11 a.m.

Book Arts Road Trip with Karen Hanmer.
Karen presents a survey of contemporary book arts which includes a broad range of various book artist’s works from traditional leather bindings, all forms of printmaking, and sculptural works with sometimes only a vague reference to the book form. Karen will show images and give insights into the thoughts of the artists through their own words.

12 noon A Fine History: the Coptic Contribution to Bookbinding with Julia Miller.
Julia will talk about the early development of the codex both in terms of structure and decorative style.  She will bring a group of binding models from her collection, representing an extended 'family' of early bindings including Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian and Islamic.
1 p.m.

Sculptural Fine Binding Designs with Jon Buller.
Jon, the owner of the Bessenberg Bindery in Ann Arbor will present an early 19th century approach on how to add a third dimension to a cover. It will include showing several of his own sculptural fine bindings, including Hemingway’s “Old Man and the Sea”. Jon will also do a demonstration showing the technique he uses and the various stages of the process.

2 p.m.

Unique Book Repairs from the Bentley Historical Library with Jim Craven.
Jim will talk about some of the unique experiences and projects he has worked on in the past 50 years as a master book binder and conservator for the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library.

3 p.m. 'til 5 p.m.

Design Bindings of Don Etherington and Monique Lallier.
Don and Monique are both master bookbinders and highly regarded as two of the world’s premier fine design binders. A unique slide presentation will illustrate the similarities and differences in their two styles of design bindings and how each has influenced the other. Bindings from the personal collection of both will be presented. Don and Monique are this year’s Co-Honorary Chairs of the Kerrytown BookFest.

Ruth McNally Barshaw, author of the Ellie McDoodle books, leads a workshop on cartooning and sketch using characters from her books as the audience follows along. Sign up before the BookFest at Nicola’s Books

 

   
  Hollander’s Mini Workshops (In the Farmer’s Market)
11 a.m. Exposed Spine Sewing with Cynthia May. Participants will make a 3” x 3” folded signature book using a sewing technique called a kettle stitch.
12:30 p.m. Three Simple Book Structures Eric Alstrom. Make an accordion book, a single signature pamphlet, and a Japanese-style, side sewn book. Bring a bone folder, if you have one.
2 p.m. Canvas Pamphlet Book with Donna Engstrom. Learn to sew a one signature pamphlet stitch with a decorated canvas cover. A button closure will finish this structure.
3:30 p.m. Flutter Book with Barbara Brown. – Make a unique hard cover “Flutter Book” with decorated pages. The style is reminiscent of the old “cootie catchers”. Bring a glue brush.
