The world’s leading thriller writer, Jeffery Deaver, headlines a group of more than 30 distinguished authors who will be appearing at the 7th annual Kerrytown BookFest Sunday September 13 at the Farmers’ Market in Ann Arbor Michigan.
Deaver, who has written 25 thrillers in his more than 20 year career, is a former journalist, lawyer and folk singer. His book “The Bodies Left Behind” was recently named as the “Best Thriller of the Year” by the International Thriller Writers Organization.
Many will remember the movie “The Bone Collector” starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie which was based on his book of the same name. His books, featuring series characters Lincoln Rhyme and Kathryn Dance, are always at the top of best sellers’ list. His newest book is “Roadside Crosses”.
Deaver will discuss his work and sign books beginning at 4 P.M. His appearance is sponsored by Aunt Agatha’s mystery book shop and Amelia Musser.
The award winning author joins other national, state and local authors at the one day event which this year is focusing on Michigan culinary books and writers. In addition, numerous true crime writers; husband-wife writers; culinary mystery writers; children’s authors and counter-culture and music writers will participate in discussions, demonstrations and readings.
Ari Weinzweig co-founder and author of “Zingerman’s Guide to Better Bacon” will join a panel discussion with Jane and Michael Stern, NPR road show personalities and authors of 20 books on pop culture, along with Jan Longone, culinary historian at the U-M Clement’s Library. The panel is sponsored by Michigan Radio and begins at noon.
Moderator Angelee Kovach leads a discussion with mystery authors Julie Hyzy (“Hail the Chief”), JoAnna Carl (“The Chocolate Jewel Case”), and Miranda Bliss “Murder has a Sweet Tooth”). All of the writers include cooking, catering, or in one case, the White House kitchen in their books.
Moderator Steve Klein of the Huron River Press leads a discussion with food authors Cynthia Furlong Reynolds (“Jiffy: A Family Tradition”), T.R. Durham (“The Smoked Seafood Cookbook”, Patty LaNoue Stearns (“Cherry Home Companion”) and Tom Bloomer, who coined the term “Michivore.”
Husband & Wife Writing Teams: Peter Ho Davies (“The Welsh Girl”) & Lynne Raughley (essayist), and Michael Byers (“Long for This World”) & Susan Hutton (“On the Vanishing of Large Creatures”) will discuss their books, their writing process and what it’s like for two writers to live together.
True Crime. Historical and contemporary true crime writing will be discussed by Mardi Link (“Isadore’s Secret”), Patrick Brode (“The Slasher Killings”), Steve Miller and Andrea Billups (“The Tara Grant Murder”). The discussion moderated by blogger and writer Laura James (“The Love Pirate and the Bandit’s Son”).
There also will be “A Conversation with Mary Ellen Geist”. Geist is the author of the Michigan Notable Book “A Measure of the Heart”. Geist will include a power point presentation about her father, who has Alzheimer’s and who is the subject of her book.
Counterculture & Music of the 60’s: Moderator Bill Castanier (mittenlit.com) leads a discussion with Mark Shaw, author of “Beneath the Mask of Holiness: Thomas Merton and the Forbidden Love Affair That Set Him Free”; Michael Rosenberg, author of “War as They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of Unrest”); Michael Erlewine, author of “Blues in Black and White” and Tom Weschler, photograhper for “Travelin’ Man: On the Road and Behind the Scenes with Bob Seger”.
In addition to the author presentations, there will be a discussion on the future of print journalism and extensive hands-on-activities for children and younger readers including author-illustrator Ruth McNally Barshaw (“Ellie McDoodle: New Kid in School”) and children’s author John Perry (“The Book That Eats People”).
Also cookbook authors, Eli and Max Sussman will conduct a cooking demonstration in Hollander’s Kitchen and Home Store based on their best-selling cookbook “Freshman in the Kitchen”.
